We’ve been shortlisted in five categories at this year’s Unlock Net Zero Live awards.

We’re delighted to have been shortlisted in the Unlock Net Zero Live Awards, which recognise the contribution of individuals, teams and organisations as they work to support the decarbonisation of the housing sector.

Of the twelve categories, recognising professional commitment to decarbonisation and net zero, Midland Heart have been shortlisted in five, including:

Building/development of the year - housing association/local authority – Project 80

Innovation of the year - energy provision – Domestic demand-side response with storage heating - Centrica, Glen Dimplex and Midland Heart

Company/organisation of the year – North – Midland Heart

Engagement campaign of the year – Project 80

Collaboration of the year – energy projects – Domestic demand-side response with storage heating - Centrica, Glen Dimplex and Midland Heart

We have been recognised for our participation in the largest UK trial of Demand Side Response technology, using smart storage heaters to help balance the national grid. DSR participation helps to stabilise this vital electricity supply, keeping our tenants warm and the lights on in their homes.

This is not the only example where we have used innovative methods in our approach to net zero. Our Project 80 development is believed to be the first of it’s kind in the country to meet the Future Homes Standard, with each home emitting 80% less carbon than those built under current regulations.

The development was recently awarded Best Use of an Emerging Technology in Housebuilding at the Housing Digital Innovation Awards, and shortlisted for the Sustainability Award at the Constructing Excellence West Midlands awards, in recognition of Midland Heart using pioneering methods to tackle issues such as decarbonisation and the delivery of new homes.

Project 80 is a really important project for both Midland Heart and the wider sector and is already influencing our approach to building new homes. It's fantastic to see Project 80 being recognised for its innovative research-based resident-lead approach.

Tony Hopkin, Head of Construction and Quality at Midland Heart

Jonny Mobbs, Head of Sustainability at Midland Heart, added:

“We are immensely proud to have been recognised across five categories in this year’s awards. It showcases the positive impact already achieved on our journey to net zero. Moreover, both key projects shortlisted involve actively piloting sector leading solutions and innovations that will open doors for the acceleration of decarbonisation in UK domestic buildings.”

Winners will be announced at the Unlock Net Zero Live Awards ceremony in Manchester on 27th June 2023, taking place alongside Europe’s largest housing festival and annual conference, Housing 2023.
